“The Jeannette Rockefeller Angel Program Kickoff Party is one of our organization’s most important events because it gives us a chance to welcome new and returning Angels to our family,” said Mark Anton, Executive Director of AIDS Assistance Program. “The Angel Program helps raise the funds needed each month to support our core food voucher program for low-income men, women, and children living with HIV/AIDS and other chronic illnesses throughout the Coachella Valley.”

The Angel Kickoff party, considered the unofficial start to the desert’s season of giving, is an annual gathering of those who believe in the mission of AIDS Assistance Program – Food Samaritans. Named in honor of philanthropist and activist Jeannette Rockefeller who helped establish the organization, the Angel Program provides year-round funding for AAP’s food voucher program. AAP receives no federal or state funding, relying on the generosity of private donors and other organizations.

Angel Program members pledge an annual gift of $500 or more, with the option of making contributions over time.  In appreciation, Angels at higher giving levels receive attractive benefits including an exclusive appreciation dinner, tickets to AAP’s annual Evening Under the Stars gala, and more.

Open to all, the Angel Program Kickoff Party provides a chance for people to learn more about AAP, and also serves as a way to thank continuing supporters.  AAP welcomes new supporters and appreciates loyal members who have remained dedicated to the Angel Program throughout the years. Cocktails, delicious hors d’oeuvres, and valet parking are included, plus an amazing performance by local favorites The Gand Band.

Headed by the dynamic husband and wife team of Joan and Gary Gand, the Gand Band features music that is inspired by Motown, 60s psychedelic, spy music, Chicago blues, and Ultra Lounge. Veteran bluesman Gary Gand drives the band, channeling a bit of Eric Clapton, Freddie King and Jeff Beck.  Keyboardist Joan Gand grooves on classic Hammond B-3 style organ and bluesy piano with inspiration from Booker T. Jones, Jimmy Smith, and Ramsey Lewis, all while her left hand is laying down the bass.  Vocalist Dion Khan adds his soulful energy, powerful voice, and sense of fun to the band. Renowned sax man John Bolivar adds his jaw-dropping virtuosity and style, and drummer Sal Frisaura provides the all-important groove that makes the audience move!
